About Steven Smith, PMHNP-BC

A firefighter, then a nurse practitioner, now a psychiatric provider. The through line is the same: showing up calmly for people in difficult moments.

Steven Smith, PMHNP-BC, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner

Background

Steven Smith is a double board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner. He completed a Master of Science in Nursing at Wagner College as a Family Nurse Practitioner, then a second Master of Science in Nursing in psychiatric mental health.

Before formal psychiatric training he spent roughly five years working as a nurse practitioner in hybrid roles across palliative and psychiatric care — settings where the conversation is rarely simple and rushing it does not work.

Before nursing

Steven is a veteran and a retired firefighter. He spent years responding to people on the worst day of their lives. That experience shapes how he practices now: he listens closely, he stays calm, and he looks at the whole person rather than the loudest symptom.

It also means first responders and veterans do not have to explain the culture to him. He already understands the shift work, the humor, the reluctance to ask for help, and the specific weight that comes with the job.

His approach

Collaborative, not prescriptive

Steven has said plainly that he does not want to dictate a plan. He wants clients involved in the decisions, because a plan someone actually agrees with is a plan they can follow.

First appointments are deliberately low-key. You describe what has been going on and what you want to be different. From there you build goals together and decide what to try first.

  • Treatment options explained in plain language
  • The least amount of medication that genuinely helps
  • Room to ask questions and change your mind
  • Attention to sleep, stress, work and physical health
  • A space where nothing you say gets judged
