Who we serve

Mental health care for first responders & veterans

From a provider who has worked the job. You will not have to explain the culture before you can talk about what is actually going on.

Steven Smith, PMHNP-BC, veteran and retired firefighter

He has been on your side of it

Steven is a veteran and a retired firefighter. He has said that this background gives him insight into what this group carries — the specific experiences, and also the mannerisms and the reluctance that show up in treatment.

That matters practically. You do not have to translate shift work, or explain why you did not call anyone, or brace for a reaction when you describe a call that stayed with you.

Frequently comes up

What people in this line of work bring

  • Sleep wrecked by rotating shifts
  • Hypervigilance that does not switch off at home
  • Specific calls or deployments that stayed
  • Irritability and short fuse with family
  • Drinking more than intended to wind down
  • Worry that seeking help affects the job
  • Difficulty with the transition out of the role
  • Grief for colleagues

The practical barriers

Built around a schedule that does not cooperate

Virtual appointments remove the trip to an office, which is often the thing that makes treatment impossible on a rotating schedule. You can take an appointment from home or from somewhere private near the station.

Insurance runs through Headway, so cost is usually closer to a copay than a private-pay rate.

How virtual appointments work

If things are acute right now

Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — veterans can press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line. Call 911 if there is immediate danger. This practice does not provide emergency or around-the-clock care.

Two ways forward

You do not have to be certain to take a step

Some people are ready to put an appointment on the calendar. Others want to understand the details first. Both are welcome here.

If you are ready

Start your booking

Headway is where appointments, insurance and billing are handled. You will see current availability, add your insurance for a cost estimate, and choose a time that works.

Book an appointment

A short contact step comes first, then Steven’s live Headway schedule.

If you have questions first

Ask before you commit

Plenty of people want to understand how virtual care works, whether their plan is accepted, or what a first appointment is like before booking anything. Send a short note and we will answer.

Ask a question

No appointment required. Please leave out medical details.

Next step

Take the next step when you feel ready

If you would like to schedule, Headway handles booking, insurance and billing. If you have questions first, send them over and we will get back to you.
